Christiansborg – Christian IV’s Brewery

Have you ever wondered what happens to old sculptures and statues, when they are can longer stand in public squares, royal gardens and palaces? They retire to places like this, The Lapidarium of Kings.

From the summer of 2024, you can experience the exhibition ‘Techno Mythologies’ along with the sculptures, which is created specifically for the Brewery by the Swedish artist duo Wang & Söderström. Inspired by the sculptures, their new works encompass physical installations, augmented reality, and 3D animations along with sound, light and scents. In this way, they have created a multi-sensory, immersive experience that presents alternatives to the dominant narratives about technology.

Over the past 30 years, our view of technology has been dominated by the emergence of the internet and the personal computer, along with the platforms and business models that have followed. Today, a few commercial companies largely define how we experience technology. We regularly receive software updates on our phones, and new hardware is constantly being launched. Most of these come from Silicon Valley in the USA, along with the narrative that their products will make our lives easier and bring us closer together. But what other narratives exist? The exhibition ‘Techno Mythologies’ offers new, speculative ideas on how we can collectively develop new narratives through contemporary art and reestablish agency in relation to our technology.

‘Techno Mythologies’ is Wang & Söderström’s first major solo exhibition and is open until 15 September. The exhibition is curated by Majken Overgaard.

Christian IV’s historic brewery from 1608 is today home to more than 350 sculptures from Danish royal palaces, gardens and squares from the period 1500-1700. Worn down by the elements over time, they have been moved inside the Brewery in order to preserve them for posterity. Besides royal sculptures, the Brewery also houses changing exhibitions of contemporary art.
