The Theatre Museum at The Court Theatre
Discover one of Copenhagen’s hidden cultural treasures at the Court Theatre, a more than 250‑year‑old royal theatre beautifully preserved inside Christiansborg’s historic riding grounds. Opened in 1767 as the king’s own stage, it remains Denmark’s oldest working theatre building, offering visitors a rare chance to wander freely through a space once filled with royal performances, masquerades and political intrigue.
A visit gives you full access to the auditorium, the sloping stage, the balconies and the intimate royal boxes where generations of kings, queens and princes once sat. This setting instantly transports you back to the 18th century.
The theatre houses the Theatre Museum, which showcases Danish theatre history through costumes, props, drawings, models and memorabilia. Compact and atmospheric, the museum is easy to explore, making it a perfect stop for visitors wanting a meaningful cultural experience without taking too much time.
