University Library in Fiolstræde

University Library in Fiolstræde

The University Library in Fiolstræde is one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful historic interiors and a public venue for research communication events, exhibitions and guided tours.

Opened in 1861 as the main library of the University of Copenhagen, the building was designed by architect Johan Daniel Herholdt and inspired by medieval architecture from Northern Italy. With its grand reading hall, cast-iron structures and wooden book galleries, it recalls some of Europe’s great historic libraries while remaining a landmark of Danish architecture in its own right.

Today, the library has a new public purpose. It is a place where the University of Copenhagen shares its research, history and ideas with the wider public. Through exhibitions, talks, cultural events and guided tours, visitors can experience the university’s research and its role in society.

Many visitors come for the building. But the library also offers a glimpse of Copenhagen as a city of learning, science and public debate.

Daily guided tours are available during opening hours: in Danish at 1 pm and in English at 2 pm. Groups of up to 8 people are welcome to join the public tours.
